Exercise and Pregnancy

Exercise is a regular part of many women's lives. This does not need to change with pregnancy. The possible benefits of regular exercise include fewer complications during pregnancy and faster recovery from labor and delivery. Regular exercise can improve your sense of well being.

Physical changes during pregnancy may require that you modify your activities somewhat. Your joints become less stable and increased blood volume makes your heart work harder. You must move carefully and may need to limit the intensity or length of your workouts. You must also be careful to avoid overheating and dehydration. Be sure to check with your clinician before starting any exercise program.

If you have not been exercising regularly, pregnancy is not the time to start a rigorous workout program. However, in moderation, exercise during pregnancy can and should be a safe, healthy experience. A daily walk can be both physically and mentally invigorating.
